Technique Tackle Box (11 to 1pm)

Join Angela in a two hour workshop dedicated to working on your bellydance technique. Angela will take you through some of her go-to drills for keeping your technique sharp as a tack. Get ready to work your brain while working up a sweat!

All bellydance styles and levels welcome. Not recommended for absolute beginners to bellydance.

Silky Sharp (2 to 4pm)

Take some of your newly polished technique and apply it to sections of a new choreography created by Angela. This piece is smooth as butter with oodles of sharp accents and is infused with lots of Angela’s signature style. Expand on the technique and explore the expressiveness of these modern fusion combos.

All bellydance styles and levels welcome. Not recommended for absolute beginners to bellydance.

ANGELA JOSEPHINE
Angela Josephine is a Modern Fusion Bellydancer studying at The Dark Side Studio in Toronto, Ontario under the tutelage of Audra Simmons and Heather Labonté. She is a member of Lavish Dance Company and The Dark Side Studio Student Troupe. She was most recently part of the full length show Fragment Repair- A New Show by Lavish.

Angela began studying bellydance in 2012 at Serpentine Studios in Halifax, NS taking traditional and tribal fusion bellydance with teachers Laura Selenzi and Monique Ryan. She was a member of Mahari Tribal and the Serpentine Student Troupe. She also studied Bharatanatyam with Suneetra Karam-Singh.

Angela enjoys enriching her dance education by travelling to take workshops with other dancers and getting nerdy talking about all things dance.

From the Start: how music inspires movement
 
Dance creation and performance is often inspired and motivated by the music we move to.
 
In this workshop, we’ll take an in depth look at several pieces music to reveal their inner workings as we broaden our knowledge of, and connection to, the music.
 
Discussion and examples of how these sounds and elements can affect and shape our movement choices will follow as we work on creating short dance phrases.
 
Please note: there will be the option of some movement in this workshop, but it is primarily lecture style.
Open to all levels and styles – no previous musical training is required, seriously.
 
Beyond Drilling: bringing life to technique
 
In the life of any dancer, the desire to develop and refine technique is a constant quest, but dance is so much more than technique!
 
We’ll explore energy, work with weight and play with time as we connect with our bodies, and consider the missing link between drilling and successful performance.
 
Inspired by this summer’s sold out Take It Back Intensive, this workshop is part experiment and part investigation, and will provide dancers with new ideas and approaches to both the creative process and performance.
 
Open to all levels and styles

Veil Poetics 10AM – NOON
Express the music through silk veil for bellydance in this workshop focusing on phrasing, nuance, punctuation and fluidity. Henna shares her technique for easeful yet exciting veil performance. Our focus will be on clarifying shapes that fit the mood and and sound of the music, upon which your own embellishments can emerge.

Pure Romance 12:30-2:30
Love, romance, and desire fuel the movements in this workshop full of juicy combinations. We’ll use precise pathways and relaxed carriage to achieve an aesthetic that makes you and your audiences swoon.

Oum Kalthoum Choreography 3-6
Drop into the soul of Egyptian music in this choreography to the Oum Kalthoum classic, “Lessa Faker (Do you remember?)”. While learning a choreography to one of the most loved Egyptian songs, Henna will illustrate and explain her method of dancing to some of the most beautiful yet challenging pieces of music for bellydancers.

This class isn’t a “belly dance class” it’s all about movement/energy/intention/focus and how playing with these different aspects of movement can enhance your dance practice and ability. Prepare to get up to get down. We’ll explore various exercises to find comfort and familiarity within transitions.

That night we’ll have our monthly showcase Harem at The Casbah – 306 King St W, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Doors open at 6:30PM.  Show is 7-8:30PM.  Tickets are $15 at the door.  Kids under 18 are free.

IANA
Iana Komarnytska is an award-winning dancer and choreographer based in Toronto, Canada, specializing in Middle Eastern and Central Asian dance styles. Over the last few years she has taught and performed in dozens of countries including Germany, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Ukraine, USA, Cyprus, Hungary and others. Iana is a graduate from professional dance program of York University, as well as winner of Star Bellydancer Canada 2014 Competition, and International Dance Competition Cairo by Cyprus 2015.

We’ll begin with exercises for finding and mobilizing the upper back and shoulder blades, then move into elbows, wrists and fingers.

Then, with Dark Side style, Audra will begin to add details to create further depth of movement, as well as introduce emotive qualities to these movements, as we bring them into short combinations.

No previous Dark Side experience is required, though some belly dance experience is suggested. Suitable for all levels.

Technique Spotlight 1:30-3:30 -SOLD OUT!
This workshop will focus on deepening your understanding and execution of fundamental hip, chest and abdominal movements as we deconstruct the basics in this fun, sweaty workshop!

We’ll refine your technique and enhance your muscular control in stationary and moving drills, adding complexity and layers as we go. We’ll see how much we can pile on, where and how it falls apart, and talk about how we can work to be able to do it all.

No previous Dark Side experience is required, though some belly dance experience is suggested, not for absolute beginners. Suitable for all levels.
