Fusion Bellydance with Angela Josephine

This piece is a delightfully strange adaptation of a song brought to us by Swedish icon and critical darling Robyn and the Norwegian Electronic music duo Royksopp. “Do It Again” by Royksopp and Robyn has been praised for being “flawlessly produced” and “adventurous.” A throbbing electro-pop gem the track features fluttering synths and slamming drums. DIY reviewed it a “a towering edifice of electronic brilliance.”

Come & enjoy this modern tribute to electric circus, inspired by club kids, with a touch of bizarre. The piece will contain both choreography and improvisation and the course will also touch on filming techniques for dance.

Wed 620-720PM ET from August 4-25. Even if you cannot attend the live Zoom class you can still join the party we’ll provide lifetime recordings for everyone attending.

Recommended for those with 1+ years experience in fusion bellydance.

Angela will provide 2 costuming accessories for those participating in the video project. Angela Josephine is a modern fusion dancer living in Hamilton, Ontario. Learn the basics of bellydance with Eshe of Mahasti – The Bellyance Emporium an award-winning professional artist. Bellydance is a celebratory, social dance performed at family functions. It’s a gentle and fun dance great for all ages. We’ll start with a brief warm up. We’ll learn and practice some basic movements before stringing them together in a combination. Roughly every 30 minutes we’ll begin work on a new combination. Traveling, shimmies, graceful hands and arms, powerful and playful hip articulations – this workshop will cover it all. At the end of our 2 hour workshop we will have a short cool down. We normally dance barefoot or in socks. We wear yoga or workout gear. There is no need to show your belly. We strongly recommend bringing water.

New Classes & More Pay What You Can from 3/23

We are excited to expand both our Basics & our Pay What You Can offerings from March 23.

Thursdays

7PM Bellydance Bascis – Drop in & Pay What You Can

8:15PM Improvisational Tribal Style/American Tribal Style

Starting Thursday 3/23 we’ll be opening another Bellydance Basics class at 7PM with Eshe. It will be a Pay What You Can class.  You can use your classcard if you have one or make a donation. The choice is yours.  We want to make sure everyone in Hamilton that wants to dance is dancing! This is a drop in class meaning you can start any time (on or after 3/23). You don’t have to commit to coming to every week (although you are most welcome to). We will be talking about good posture, weight changes, traveling, isolations, shimmies, arm & hand movements, hip articulations, transitions – basically all of the building blocks of bellydance.  Like our other basics classes, this offering will also be a bridge to choreography so if you wish to eventually transition you can do so with ease.

We’ll also be offering a new ITS/ATS class lead by Eshe at 8:15PM.
ITS – Improvisational Tribal Style is a freestyle dance format inspired by Carolena Nericcio’s American Tribal Style. Moving like a flock of birds or school of fish, we’ll use the body to communicate intent. ITS is like a language, after we learn a shared vocabulary we are able to have spontaneous conversation. With a turn of the head, hand gesture or foot placement the leader will cue a preset combination. This dance is great for being in the moment, creating art right out of thin air while listening to the music, as well as joyous and playful group work. The roots of this dance are Egyptian, featuring both folklore and traditional bellydance. The ITS we explore will also be peppered with bits of Indian and Spanish fusion as well as theatrical & modern dance stylizations.

We will also explore the founding San Francisco style ATS.
